(PLEASE NOTE: This collection does not include a piano accompaniment) This book contains approachable arrangements of 65 folk songs from the canons of Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, and Manx music, ranging from the instantly recognizable to the uncommon to the rare. Each song is rendered in a simple but faithful arrangement, designed with intermediary violinists in mind, but also perfect for the advanced musician who wishes to expand their Celtic repertoire. The music I’ve included here consist of love songs, pub songs, reels, hymns, and patriotic anthems, all of which have traditionally been played on the fiddle, and all of which trace their provenance to one of the Celtic cultures of the British Isles. Ireland and Scotland feature most prominently, but Wales, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man also have rich and storied traditions which are usually ignored by Celtic anthologies and albums.These tunes will also be limited in scope to the classics of the Early Modern and Industrial eras – roughly ranging from the end of the War of the Roses (1487) to the start of World War One (1914), with most of them are tightly clustered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The break-neck period between the Glorious Revolution (1688) and the Irish War of Independence (1919) was one of rapid change, political upheaval, and artistic growth (in Scotland and Ireland, especially) which fostered the dynamic music – so often marked with caustic satire, ribald subversiveness, and profound mourning – of the Celtic peoples of Great Britain and Ireland.The result has been a legacy of high-energy ballads, dances, hymns, and chants, as well as some truly heart-breaking elegies of loss (e.g., “Bonny Portmore,” “Foggy Dew,” “Loch Lomond,” and “Will Ye Na Come Back Again”).
